DJI Osmo Action 3 Release Date – Rumors and Leaks

In this article, I will be documenting the upcoming DJI Osmo Action 3 release date, specifications, leaked pictures, etc. Last updated: 16 June 2022.

DJI entered the world of action cameras with the original DJI Osomo Action released in May 2019. It was a great rugged camera that rivaled the GoPro and was meant to be used in extreme sports and in all conditions.

It was a great addition to the DJI product line and the market received it really well. I was a durable, all-terrain camera that you can take with you anywhere.

The DJI Osmo Action 2 was an upgrade to the original Osmo Action and promised some great features with a complete redesign. The Action 2 was a square camera, small enough to pin to your chest via lanyard or strap onto your hat.

It’s small size and capable camera with 1/1.7” large sensor and a wide 155° field of view made it a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts. However, the small size came with quite a lot of problems.

Some of the problems in the Action 2 were:

  1. Overheating problem due to its small size and comparatively powerful processor inside.
  2. The battery module was not waterproof which makes its use unsuitable in certain conditions
  3. You cannot charge the main camera unit directly and had to attach the battery module.
  4. The battery module was expensive if you have to get it separately
  5. SD card slot is built in the battery module instead of the main unit. The transfer from internal memory takes too long.
  6. It shuts down in cold weather (anything below 40F) due to no existant battery insulation.

All in all, the Action 2 was a great camera but these shortcomings made it a dealbreaker for extreme sports lover. The original Osmo Action was great but the second addition was quite short of an actual “action” camera.

DJI Osmo Action 3 release date

Since the release of Action 2 in November 2021, people have been waiting for the next version in the line i-e Osmo Action 3.

As of writing this page, we do not have any credible news of the Action 3 coming but some industry insider speculate that the new Osmo Action 3 might already be in the works and will be released sometime in November 2023 next year.

We normally start receiving inside “leaks” a year ahead of the official launch. Its a way for manufacturers to build up hype for the product.

We have seen these with other products like the upcoming DJI Pocket 3 and DJI Inspire 3 drone.

So far, there are no credible leaks to give but I have been following DJI product development since early 2016 and looking at the timeline of the previous products, I can say with some certainty that the new Osmo Action 3 will be coming in the fall of next year i-e 2023.

DJI Osmo Action 3 Possible Specs

DJI has been privately taking feedback from the users of the current Action 2 and I believe they have received some good suggestions from the community.

Looking at the newer action cameras on the market and the new tech available to DJI to leverage, below are some of the possible improvements that we might see in the Osmo Action 3.

Updated Camera

The current Action 2 came with a 1/1.17″ CMOS sensor which is great in bright daylight. But when you test it under low light conditions, it doesn’t pan out well.

You have to push the ISO up which adds unwanted noise to the photo.

Although the sensor size on Action 2 is still bigger than the latest GoPro Hero 10 (its biggest competitor), we might just see a 1″ sensor DJI used in the DJI Air 2s drone. It will result in better nighttime photos in low light.

Also, the current Action 2 camera has only 8-bit color depth and cannot capture true HDR (although DJI market it as an HDR capable but it’s not true HDR).

With Action 3, we might see true HDR with a 10-bit color depth and a 13-14 stop dynamic range.

More rugged design

As I mentioned earlier, the original Osmo Action had a rugged design just like most GoPros but the Action 2 was totally redesigned to reduce the bulk to improve portability.

This came at the cost of durability. The Action 2 was not a true “action” camera anymore as it is a little fragile in its making.

Design comparison: Hero 10 vs Action 2 vs Osmo Action

DJI has been taking feedback and if it is going to compete with the GoPro action cameras, it has to go back to the original design and combine all the good things of Action 2 with the rugged design of the original Osmo Action.

Also, I personally feel the modular design of the Action 2 kind of undercut its purpose as a fast action camera. With all the attached parts, you cannot confidently take it on rough rides.

A true action camera will be one rugged module with everything inside a tough cover. No modules, no accessories. Just one main module.

Better thermal management

The smaller form factor of the DJI Action 2 made it susceptible to thermal variations. Due to the absence of any heat sink inside, it gets quite hot with continuous use, especially at higher frame rates.

The processor inside is very powerful and with great power comes great heat. This one fact has left many users unsatisfied with their purchases.

Heat is not the only problem. The tiny battery inside lacks any thermal insulation from the outside. Since the size is really small, the battery is separated from the environment by just the body cover.

Due to this, if you take your Action 2 to areas with below-freezing point temperatures, it will just shut off after a few minutes of recording. Bummer right?

With the new Action 3, we might see better heat and cold management so that it can be used in a variety of conditions. That’s what a true action should be able to do.

Built-in SD card slot

For some strange reasons, the Action 2 does not have an SD slot inside the main camera module. Although it has an internal memory of 32 GBs, I don’t think that’s enough for everybody.

With Action 3, I would really love to have an SD card slot inside the main module so that we can expand the storage capacity as per our needs. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

Bigger battery

The Action 2 camera can record for an hour tops that too on medium camera settings. That’s too low. Even the DJI Pocket 2 has better battery life with all the gimbal movements and all.

We might see a bigger battery inside the Osmo Action 3 that can provide a recording time of at least 2 hours. The Pocket 2 has a battery life of 2+ hours. If they can do it for the Pocket 2, I think they can engineer a good battery for the Action 3 as well.
