How to Turn Off GoPro? [ALL MODELS]

Your GoPro is the ultimate king of action cameras and the best that money can buy. Although it comes with decent battery life, it is still essential to conserve the power so that you can shoot more.

To get the most out of your battery, you have to turn it off when you are done shooting. How to turn off GoPro so that you don’t end up with a drained battery? Let’s discuss.

There are primarily three (3) ways to turn your GoPro OFF (and ON). The exact instructions might vary from model to model so read till the end to find instructions for your exact GoPro model

1. Mode Button: To turn off your GoPro, you have to press your Mode button for up to 3 seconds. You will hear 3 beeps and the red LED light on the screen will flash a few times and the camera will turn off.
2. Voice Command: If you have enabled voice commands from within your settings, you can just say the phrase “GoPro Turn Off” and it will turn off. Do note that voice commands drain your battery (more on this below)
3. Auto Power OFF: If you leave your GoPro ON, it will auto turn off after a set time. The time can be set inside the settings [Preferences > General > Auto Power Off] in increments of 5/10/15 minutes.

Turning off your GoPro when not in use will preserve your battery and you can shoot for a long time. It becomes even more important when you are away in the wild and have no access to wall power.

How to turn off GoPro Hero 10

You can use the following 3 methods to turn your GoPro Hero 10 OFF.

Mode Button

This is the easiest way to turn your GoPro Hero 10 OFF. To turn your GoPro OFF after shooting, just long-press the mode button for 3 seconds till you hear beeping, and your GoPro will turn off.

Although the guy in the video also talks about pulling the battery out to turn it OFF, I would not recommend it. Pulling the battery out while the card is being read or written on can cause serious damage to your files and even render it unusable. So, be aware what you see on the internet.

Voice Command

If you have voice commands enabled in your GoPro, you can say the preset phrase “GoPro Turn Off” to turn your camera OFF.

Usually, GoPro mics are pretty sensitive to voice commands and can hear you in noisy environments as well. But I have noticed that if the camera is mounted in a way that air is directly hitting the mic, the voice commands are missed sometimes.

Auto turn OFF

If you forget to turn your GoPro off, there is a backup system that turns it OFF automatically after a set time.

From the swipe down, go to Preferences > General > Auto Power Off and set the timer to the desired minutes. Generally, I keep it at 5 minutes to preserve the battery the most but you can choose whatever is a reasonable time for you.

GoPro is pretty consistent with its software so the same instructions will apply to the upcoming GoPro Hero 11 as well.

To turn off your GoPro Hero 9, you can use any of the below methods:

Turning GoPro Hero 5 Session is a little different. It turns ON when you hit the Shutter button and starts recording. When you hit the Shutter button again, it will stop recording and will turn OFF.

The same method applies to the HERO Session and the HERO4 Session. There is no dedicated button to turn it ON/OFF nor do you need to.

3. Auto Power OFF: In the GoPro Fusion, you cannot adjust the timer. The camera will automatically turn OFF after 7 minutes.

How to use QuickCapture to save battery?

QickCapture is a feature in your GoPro that you can enable in the settings. When enabled, you can start recording just by pressing the Shutter button even when your GoPro is OFF.

Once you stop recording by pressing the Shutter button again, the GoPro will be automatically turned OFF saving you precious battery juice.
